Moving Your Mailchimp Tags to Mail Blaze
If you're switching from Mailchimp to Mail Blaze and you've been using Tags to group your contacts, that grouping doesn't have to start from scratch. You can bring the information across when you export and import your list, then use it to build the same groups in Mail Blaze.
Mail Blaze doesn't use Tags. It uses Segments, and this article walks you through getting your tag data over and turning it into segments.
Before you start
Mail Blaze doesn't convert Mailchimp Tags into Segments automatically. Your tag data comes across as contact information during the import, and you'll use that information to build your segments yourself. It's a quick extra step, not a blocker, and this article covers exactly how.
Step 1: Export your contacts from Mailchimp
- In Mailchimp, export your audience as a CSV file.
- Open the file and check for a Tags column. This holds the tags you've assigned to each contact, and it's what carries your grouping across to Mail Blaze.
Step 2: Import the CSV into Mail Blaze
- Upload the CSV file to your Mail Blaze list.
- During the import, select Automatic Field Creation. This creates a field for the Tags column, so none of that data is lost.
Step 3: Turn your tags into segments
Mail Blaze uses Segments rather than Mailchimp's Tags, so the next step is building segments from the tag data you've just imported.
Here's how that looks in practice. Say you run a small homeware store, Willow & Bloom, and in Mailchimp you tagged your contacts as Wholesale Buyer, Workshop Attendee, and Newsletter Only. Once your CSV is imported and that Tags field has come across, you'd create three matching segments in Mail Blaze, one for each group, using the tag data to filter contacts into the right one.
Your Wholesale Buyer segment might then receive trade pricing updates, your Workshop Attendee segment gets reminders for upcoming classes, and your Newsletter Only segment stays on general updates. Same groups, same targeting, just organised as Segments instead of Tags.
Step 4: Carry on as before
Once your contacts are imported and your segments are set up, you can use them the same way you used Tags in Mailchimp: to target specific groups when you send campaigns.
Key thing to remember
Tags aren't automatically converted into Segments. The tag data comes across with your contacts, and you create the matching segments yourself once it's in Mail Blaze.
