Most guides about AI in email stop at "it can write your subject lines". That undersells it. When you create an email with AI inside the builder itself, the AI isn't a separate writing tool you copy and paste from. It works on the email you're building: the copy, the layout and even the images, while you talk to it.
The clearest way to show what that means is to build one. Here's a single campaign, start to finish, for a fictional outdoor clothing brand called Northwind promoting a weekend sale on its winter range.
What does it mean to create an email with AI?
Creating an email with AI means using an AI assistant inside your email builder to generate a first draft from your goal, then refining that draft by giving plain-language instructions instead of editing every element by hand. The AI handles structure, layout and repetitive changes. You stay responsible for the message, the brand voice and the final decision to send.
Step 1: Set up your brand identity once
Before Northwind's marketing team writes a word, their logo, brand colours and fonts are saved in the builder. This is a one-off job, and it means every draft the AI generates starts on-brand instead of in a generic template that needs restyling.
If several people build your emails, this step does more for consistency than any style guide. We go deeper on why in our article on email brand consistency.
Step 2: Generate the draft from a brief
Instead of picking a template and filling in the blanks, the team gives the builder a short brief:
- Campaign objective: promote the winter range with 20% off this weekend only
- Call to action: Shop the winter range
- Key message: warm, practical gear for the coldest weekends, at a price that won't last
They choose a design style, generate the campaign, and get a complete, ready-to-edit email with a hero section, product blocks, a clear call to action and Northwind's own styling. Nothing is final yet, but nobody had to face a blank page.
Step 3: Edit the copy and layout by chat
This is where creating an email with AI starts to feel different. Each change is an instruction, given on the block it applies to:
- On the headline: "Shorten this headline." The result reads: Winter range: 20% off this weekend only.
- On the product section: "Switch this to two columns."
- On the intro paragraph: "Make this friendlier."
Each change takes seconds, and each one can be reviewed, kept or asked for again. The small edits that usually get skipped when a deadline is close now actually get made.
Step 4: Edit images without leaving the builder
The hero photo of a model in a winter jacket is a little dark and has too much empty sky. Normally that means opening a separate design tool, editing, exporting and re-uploading.
Instead, the team clicks into the image and tells the AI Assistant what they want: brighten it, and crop it to focus on the jacket. The image updates in place, and they carry on building.
For a lot of teams, this is the step that saves the most time. Image tweaks are the classic reason a campaign stalls waiting for a designer.
Step 5: Set the layout for how your audience reads
Northwind's campaign reports show most of their subscribers open on their phones. So they check the email in the mobile view, make sure the call to action sits high, and confirm the two product columns stack cleanly on a small screen. The builder lets you design for desktop and mobile, desktop only, or mobile only, so the layout matches the audience rather than a guess. Our guide to mobile vs desktop email design explains how to read your device split.
Step 6: Preview dark mode
One click on the dark mode toggle shows the email as dark-mode readers will see it. Northwind's dark logo nearly vanishes against the dark background, so they add a light outline around it. It takes a minute, and it saves the brand from looking careless in a lot of inboxes.
Step 7: Make it sound like you
The AI's draft is good. It isn't Northwind yet. The final step is a human one: read it as a subscriber, rewrite any line that sounds generic, and check that the offer, dates and links are right. AI is excellent at structure and speed. It doesn't know your audience the way you do, and it shouldn't be the last pair of eyes before you send.
What AI should and shouldn't do in your email workflow
AI earns its place on the mechanical work: first drafts, layout changes, resizing and reformatting, image adjustments and consistency. Keep for yourself the decisions that shape engagement: what you're offering, who it's for, what your brand would never say, and whether the email is ready to send. That split is what makes AI genuinely useful rather than just fast.
A quick checklist for your next AI-built email
- Is your brand identity saved, so the draft starts on-brand?
- Did you give the AI a clear objective, call to action and key message?
- Have you edited copy, layout and images until it reads as you intended?
- Does the layout suit your audience's device split?
- Have you checked it in dark mode?
- Has a human read every line, link and date before sending?

Frequently asked questions
Can AI create a complete marketing email?
Yes. An AI email builder can generate a full campaign draft from a short brief, including layout, copy and styling. The strongest results come from treating that draft as a starting point and refining it in your own voice.
Can AI edit images inside an email builder?
Some builders, including Mail Blaze's, let you edit images by giving the AI Assistant a plain-language instruction, so you can adjust an image without leaving the email you're building.
Will an AI-built email sound like my brand?
It will look like your brand if your logo, colours and fonts are saved in the builder. Sounding like your brand still depends on you. Read every draft as a subscriber and rewrite anything that feels generic.
Is creating an email with AI free?
It depends on the platform. In Mail Blaze, AI features run on AI credits, and every account starts with free introductory credits.
