Estimates vary by source, but they cluster in the same range: SQ Magazine's 2026 data puts mobile devices at around 60% of all email opens globally, and Litmus and Stripo both independently report smartphones as the primary device for opening email this year. A desktop-first design process, however good it looks in a browser preview, is now optimising for the minority of your list.
The distinction matters. Mobile-first email design means building the layout around a small screen from the first draft, then adapting up to desktop, rather than designing for desktop and hoping a responsive template handles the rest. A design that works on mobile will almost always work on desktop too. The reverse is rarely true.
Stripo's 2026 research found mobile-responsive design delivers up to a 15% increase in mobile clicks compared with non-optimised layouts. Genesysgrowth's 2026 mobile engagement round-up separately found 75% of users report deleting emails that are not optimised for mobile, which turns a poor mobile layout from an inconvenience into a lost subscriber.

Litmus's February 2026 analysis of over 1.1 billion opens found Apple, across iPhone, iPad, and Mac Mail combined, holds a little over half the email client market, with Gmail's web, Android, and iOS clients together accounting for roughly another quarter. Together, Apple and Gmail cover close to 90% of opens, which means a campaign that renders cleanly in those two ecosystems renders cleanly almost everywhere that matters.
More than a quarter of email users now have dark mode enabled across major clients. Test your logo and any transparent-background images against a dark background before sending, since a logo designed only for a white background can disappear or look broken for a meaningful share of your list.
Mail Blaze's email builder previews every campaign across mobile, desktop, and dark mode before you send, so nothing about how it renders is left to guesswork.

When enabled, this setting automatically resizes images to fit the full width of a mobile screen. If turned off, images stay fixed to their predefined desktop size.

This option lets you hide specific blocks or sections of your design when the email is viewed on a mobile device.

By default, multi-column layouts stack vertically on mobile phones. Enabling this option keeps your columns side-by-side.

You can preview your design for mobile devices by toggling the device icon in the top left corner of the Mail Blaze preview window.
What is the single biggest mobile email design mistake?
Multi-column layouts built for desktop and left to compress awkwardly on a phone. A single-column layout is the safest default for any campaign expected to be opened primarily on mobile. You can set stacking with our mobile settings feature.
Does mobile-first design hurt the desktop experience?
No. A well-built mobile-first layout scales up cleanly to desktop. The reverse, shrinking a desktop layout down, is what tends to break.
How big should CTA buttons be for mobile?
Large enough to tap accurately with a thumb, with generous padding around the button so a near-miss does not land on an unrelated link. There is no single universal pixel size, but err generous rather than compact.
Should I design differently for dark mode?
Test your existing design against a dark background rather than building a fully separate version. The main risks are transparent logos disappearing and low-contrast text becoming unreadable.
Mail Blaze is an email marketing platform specialising in email engagement, with a drag-and-drop builder that previews every campaign the way your subscribers will actually see it.
