Black Friday Email Deliverability: Raise Volume Without Losing the Inbox

Most teams plan their Black Friday emails around the offer: the discount, the design, the subject line. Far fewer plan around deliverability, which decides whether any of it reaches the inbox. Peak season is the one time of year when almost every sender sends more, and mailbox providers are paying close attention to who does it well.

What affects Black Friday email deliverability?

Black Friday email deliverability depends on how your sending looks to mailbox providers such as Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail: how consistent your volume is, how your subscribers respond, and whether your authentication is in place. Sudden volume spikes, sends to unengaged subscribers and rising complaint rates are the most common reasons peak-season emails end up in spam.

Why a volume jump looks risky

Mailbox providers learn what normal looks like for your domain. If you usually send one email a week and suddenly send one a day, that change on its own isn't a problem. What matters is what comes with it. More sends usually mean more emails reaching people who weren't expecting them, which means more ignored emails, more deletions and more spam complaints.

Those are the signals providers use to decide whether your email is wanted. During peak season they matter even more, because inboxes are crowded and filters are busy.

How to raise your volume gradually

Start ramping up now

Don't save your increase for Black Friday week. If you plan to send three emails in the final week of November, start sending a little more often in early November, so the change is a steady climb rather than a cliff.

Send extra emails to your most engaged subscribers first

When you add a send, give it to the people most likely to open and click: those who've engaged in the last 30 to 90 days. Their positive engagement builds trust with mailbox providers before your larger sends go out. Our guide to email segmentation strategy covers how to build that segment.

Widen the audience step by step

Once your engaged sends are performing well, extend to slightly less active subscribers. Keep long-unengaged subscribers out of your peak sends altogether.

Keep your sending pattern predictable

Send from the same domain and sender name you always use, at similar times. Peak season is not the moment to change your sending domain or try a new from address. Mailbox providers have no history with it.

The checks to run before your biggest sends

  • Authentication. Make sure SPF, DKIM and DMARC are set up and aligned for your sending domain. Google's email sender guidelines require authentication for bulk senders.
  • Easy unsubscribes. Make it simple to leave. A visible unsubscribe link costs you one subscriber; a hidden one costs you a spam complaint, which is far worse for your reputation. Google's guidelines also ask bulk senders to support one-click unsubscribe.
  • Complaint rates. Google's guidelines ask senders to keep spam complaint rates below 0.3%. Check yours in your reports after every send.
  • List quality. Remove addresses that bounce, and clean any list you haven't sent to in a while before it goes anywhere near a peak send.
  • Content. Avoid heavy images with little text, broken links and misleading subject lines. They all add risk when volume is high.

What to watch after each send

Don't wait until the end of the season to look at results. After each send, check:

  1. Bounce rate. A jump suggests list quality problems.
  2. Unsubscribes and complaints. A rise suggests you're sending too often to that segment.
  3. Clicks. Falling clicks across sends are an early sign people are tuning out.

If any of these move in the wrong direction, slow down and narrow your audience before the next send. One adjusted send is far better than a reputation problem in the busiest week of the year.

Your peak-season deliverability checklist

  1. Have you started increasing your volume gradually?
  2. Do extra sends go to your most engaged subscribers first?
  3. Are SPF, DKIM and DMARC in place for your sending domain?
  4. Is your unsubscribe link easy to find?
  5. Are long-unengaged subscribers excluded from peak sends?
  6. Are you checking bounces, complaints and clicks after every send?

How Mail Blaze approaches this

Mail Blaze is an email marketing platform built for teams who want more from email. It is designed around email engagement: helping businesses build audiences that open, click, reply and come back.

Every list uploaded to Mail Blaze goes through a List Health Check, which tells you whether cleaning is needed before you send. If cleaning is required, it happens before the list is used, which protects your sender reputation, and list cleaning is the only thing we bill separately. Mail Blaze also only sends to opted-in subscribers, and your campaign reports show bounces, unsubscribes and complaints after every send, with comparative filters to see how one send performed against another.

The festive season email plan for e-commerce shows how to spread your sends across the season so no single week carries all the risk.

Frequently asked questions

Does sending more emails on Black Friday hurt deliverability? Not on its own. Problems come when extra volume reaches people who don't want it, causing complaints and low engagement. Increase volume gradually and send extra emails to your most engaged subscribers first.

How early should I prepare for Black Friday email? Start raising your sending frequency and checking your list a few weeks before Black Friday, so the increase is gradual.

What spam complaint rate is too high? Google's sender guidelines ask bulk senders to keep spam rates below 0.3%. Aim to stay well under that.

Should I change my sending domain before Black Friday? No. A new domain has no reputation history with mailbox providers. Make domain changes well outside your busiest season.
