Dark Mode Email: How to Design Emails That Work

Dark mode email: how to make sure your emails still work

Dark mode email is what happens when someone reads your email with their device or inbox set to a dark theme. Their email app may change your colours, and a design that looks great on white can become hard to read on black.

This guide explains how dark mode affects your emails, the most common problems to look out for, and how to check and fix your design in Mail Blaze before you send.

What is dark mode in email?

Dark mode is a display setting that shows light text on a dark background instead of dark text on a light one. People switch it on to reduce glare, save battery, or simply because they prefer the look.

When a reader has dark mode on, their email app decides how to display your email. Some apps leave your design exactly as you built it. Others change some or all of your colours to suit the dark theme. You can't control which app your readers use, but you can design so your email works either way.

Why does dark mode matter for email engagement?

A reader who can't read your email won't act on it. If your logo disappears, your headline fades into the background or your button blends in, the effort you put into the message is lost in the first second.

Dark mode also shapes how professional your brand looks. An email that falls apart in dark mode tells readers you didn't check. One that looks good in both modes builds the kind of trust that keeps people opening, week after week.

How do email apps handle dark mode?

Email apps handle dark mode in one of three ways, and the same email can look different in each. That's why checking your email in dark mode matters, even if it looks perfect in light mode.

HOW THE APP HANDLES IT WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR EMAIL EXAMPLES
No change Your email shows exactly as you designed it Apple Mail, Gmail in a web browser
Partial change Light backgrounds turn dark and dark text turns light, but some colours stay as they are Outlook.com, Outlook on Mac and iPhone
Full change Almost every colour is flipped, including ones you chose on purpose Gmail app on iPhone, Outlook on Windows

Email apps update often, and they don't always behave the same way from one version to the next. Treat this table as a guide, not a guarantee, and always send yourself a test.

What are the most common dark mode email problems?

Most dark mode problems come down to contrast: something that stood out on a light background blends into a dark one. These are the ones to look out for:

  • Disappearing logos. A dark logo on a transparent background can vanish against a dark background.
  • Logos in white boxes. A logo saved with a white background shows up as a white rectangle.
  • Unreadable text. Coloured headings and links often don't adjust as well as plain black body text.
  • Buttons that blend in. A button that pops on white can fade into a dark background.
  • Changed brand colours. Apps that flip colours may turn your brand colours into shades you never chose.
  • Text in images. Words that are part of an image don't change at all, so dark text in an image can become hard to read.

How do I check my email in dark mode in Mail Blaze?

Use the dark mode toggle in the campaign editor pane. It shows your email as a dark mode reader would see it, so you can spot and fix problems before you send.

  1. Open your email in the campaign editor.
  2. Choose your build option using the build option button: Desktop/Mobile, Desktop only or Mobile only.
  3. Click the dark mode toggle in the campaign editor pane.
  4. Check each view for the problems listed above: logos, text, buttons and images.
  5. Make your adjustments. [Add how dark mode changes apply, pending product confirmation.]
  6. Switch the toggle off and check your email still looks right in light mode.
  7. Send yourself a test and open it with dark mode switched on, ideally in the email apps your audience uses most.

How do I design emails that work in dark mode?

Design for contrast that holds up on both light and dark backgrounds. These tips cover most of what can go wrong:

  • Give your logo a safe background. Use a version with a small light padded background, or add a thin light outline, so it stays visible on dark backgrounds. Avoid dark logos on transparent backgrounds.
  • Keep important text as text. Put headlines, offers and calls to action in text blocks, not inside images, so email apps can adjust them.
  • Choose button colours that work both ways. A strong mid-tone colour with clear text usually stays visible on light and dark backgrounds.
  • Avoid pure white and pure black. Very slightly off-white and off-black shades are less likely to be flipped harshly by some email apps.
  • Check coloured text carefully. Light greys and pale brand colours that read well on white can disappear on dark.
  • Pick images that suit both backgrounds. Images with white edges can look like boxes in dark mode, so check how they sit against a dark background.

Dark mode checklist before you send

Run through this list with the dark mode toggle on:

  • ☐ My logo is visible and doesn't sit in a white box
  • ☐ All headlines and body text are easy to read
  • ☐ Links stand out from the text around them
  • ☐ Buttons are clearly visible, with readable text
  • ☐ Brand colours still look right
  • ☐ Images don't have awkward white edges
  • ☐ Important words aren't locked inside images
  • ☐ My email still looks right with the toggle off
  • ☐ I've sent a test and opened it in dark mode

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to build a separate email for dark mode?

No. You build one email and use the dark mode toggle to check and adjust it, so it works for readers in either mode.

Can I stop email apps from changing my colours in dark mode?

Not completely. Some email apps change colours automatically and there's no way to switch that off. The best approach is to design with strong contrast so your email still works when colours change.

Why does my email look different in two email apps?

Each app handles dark mode in its own way. Some leave your email as it is, some change a few colours, and some flip almost everything.

Will the dark mode toggle show exactly how my email looks in every inbox?

It gives you a strong preview, but email apps vary and change with updates. Always send yourself a test and check it with dark mode switched on.

Does dark mode affect whether my email reaches the inbox?

No. Dark mode changes how your email looks once it arrives, not whether it's delivered.

Can the AI Assistant help with dark mode?

Yes. Hover over any section, click the AI button, and ask it to make that section easier to read in dark mode.
