Mobile Email Optimisation: Why It Matters and How to Do It

Mobile email optimisation: why it matters and how to get it right

Mobile email optimisation means designing your emails so they're easy to read and act on from a phone. For many email lists, most opens now happen on mobile, and that's where a reader decides in seconds whether to read on or move on.

This guide explains the benefits of optimising for mobile, what a mobile-friendly email looks like, and how to build one in Mail Blaze.

What is a mobile-optimised email?

A mobile-optimised email fits a phone screen without pinching or zooming. The text is large enough to read, the layout stacks neatly in a single column, and buttons are big enough to tap with a thumb.

It's still the same email your desktop readers see. It simply adapts, or is designed from the start, so the experience on a small screen is just as good.

What are the benefits of optimising your email for mobile?

A mobile-optimised email gets read, clicked and acted on more easily, which means better engagement from the readers you already have. Here's how:

  1. More people actually read it Tiny text, wide layouts and images that don't fit force readers to pinch and zoom. Most won't bother. A mobile-friendly email is easy to read from the first line, so your message gets a fair chance.
  2. More clicks on what matters Buttons that are big enough to tap, and placed where a thumb can reach them, get used. Small links crammed together get missed or tapped by accident.
  3. Fewer deletes and unsubscribes A reader who struggles with your email on their phone is more likely to delete it, and after a few frustrating sends, to unsubscribe altogether. A good mobile experience keeps them opening.
  4. A stronger impression of your brand An email that looks polished on a phone shows you care about your reader's time. One that looks broken says the opposite, and that impression carries into your next send.
  5. Faster action Mobile readers often act in the moment: booking, buying, replying. When your call to action is clear and easy to tap, you catch that moment instead of hoping they'll come back later on a laptop.
  6. Better data to build on When more readers can engage, your reports reflect what your audience really thinks of your content, not how hard your email was to use. That gives you clearer insight for every campaign that follows.

How do I know how many of my readers use mobile?

Check the device breakdown in your Mail Blaze campaign reports. It shows how many of your opens and clicks come from mobile, desktop and other devices.

Look at a few recent campaigns rather than just one, and use comparative filters to see whether the split changes by campaign type. A weekly newsletter might be read mostly on phones, while a detailed B2B update might be opened at a desk. Your own numbers are the best guide to how you should build.

What does a mobile-friendly email look like?

A mobile-friendly email is simple, readable and easy to tap. These are the design choices that make the biggest difference:

  • A single-column layout. Content stacks from top to bottom, so nothing gets squashed side by side.
  • Readable text. Body text of around 16px and headlines noticeably larger, so no one needs to zoom.
  • Tap-friendly buttons. Buttons at least 44px tall, with space around them so readers don't tap the wrong thing.
  • Your main message near the top. Put your key point and call to action where readers see them without much scrolling.
  • Short paragraphs. Two or three sentences at most. Long blocks of text feel even longer on a small screen.
  • Images that fit. Images should scale to the screen width and stay light, so they load quickly on mobile data.
  • A short subject line and useful preview text. Phones show fewer characters, so lead with what matters. Aim for subject lines under about 50 characters.
  • One clear call to action. One obvious next step is easier to act on than several competing ones.

What are the most common mobile email mistakes?

Most mobile problems come from designing on a large screen and never checking a small one. Watch out for:

  • Multi-column layouts that squash text into narrow, hard-to-read strips.
  • Text inside images, which shrinks with the image and becomes unreadable.
  • Links placed close together, so readers tap the wrong one.
  • Heavy images that load slowly on mobile data, or not at all.
  • Burying the call to action at the bottom of a long email.
  • Long subject lines that get cut off before the important part.
  • Skipping the test, so problems only show up once your audience has seen them.

How do I build a mobile-friendly email in Mail Blaze?

Choose your build option in the email editor pane, then fine-tune your mobile view before you send. The new email builder gives you three options:

  • Desktop/Mobile (the default): build one email and adjust the desktop and mobile views separately. The right choice for most campaigns.
  • Mobile only: ideal for short, action-led sends like flash sales, event reminders and quick updates.
  • Desktop only: for emails you know will be read on larger screens.

To optimise for mobile:

  1. Open your email in the campaign editor.
  2. Click the build option button in the email editor pane and choose Desktop/Mobile or Mobile only.
  3. Switch to the mobile view and check your layout, text size and buttons.
  4. Make mobile-specific changes where needed, such as hiding a block that works better on a larger screen.
  5. Use the AI Assistant to tighten things up. Hover over a section, click the AI button and try "Shorten this for mobile readers" or "Make this button text shorter".
  6. Send yourself a test and open it on your phone.

You can change your build option at any point while you're designing.

Mobile checklist before you send

Run through this in the mobile view, then again on your phone:

  • ☐ The layout is a single column with nothing squashed
  • ☐ Body text is readable without zooming
  • ☐ Buttons are easy to tap, with space around them
  • ☐ My main message and call to action appear near the top
  • ☐ Paragraphs are short
  • ☐ Images fit the screen and load quickly
  • ☐ Important words aren't locked inside images
  • ☐ My subject line isn't cut off before the key point
  • ☐ My preview text adds a reason to open
  • ☐ I've checked it in dark mode too
  • ☐ I've sent a test and opened it on my phone

Frequently asked questions

Why is mobile email optimisation important?

Because many of your readers open email on their phones. If your email is hard to read or tap on a small screen, they're less likely to engage, and more likely to delete or unsubscribe.

Should I build for mobile only?

Only if your reports show almost all of your audience reads on mobile, or the email is short and action-led. For most campaigns, Desktop/Mobile gives you the best of both.

Can I change something on mobile without changing the desktop version?

Yes. When you build with Desktop/Mobile, you can adjust each view separately, for example hiding a block on mobile.

What text size should I use for mobile email?

Around 16px for body text is a good guide, with headlines noticeably larger. If you have to zoom to read it on your own phone, it's too small.

How big should buttons be on mobile?

Aim for at least 44px tall, with enough space around them that readers can tap easily without hitting something else.

Does mobile optimisation help with dark mode too?

They're separate settings, but they work together. Many mobile readers also use dark mode, so check your email with the dark mode toggle as well.
